"I am not throwing away my shot! I am not throwing away my shot! Hey yo, I'm just like my country I'm young scrappy and hungry and I'm not throwing away my shot." - Lin-Manuel Miranda, Hamilton
I know, I know, Hamilton. But I can't stop listening to it, singing it, running to it, thinking about it and humbled by it. But this lyric and song is the one I keep coming back to as my confidence building, go get it done anthem for this year.
I've had lots of anthems throughout my life, Barbara's "Don't Rain on My Parade", "Empire State of Mind" by Alicia Keys, the classic "Don't Stop Believing" by Journey and pretty much every Whitney Houston song ever written. You know your go to roll the windows down, sing on the top of your lungs and get you pumped up songs.
But there is just something about the fact that Hamilton is about the men and women who built our country that gets me every time. They dared to break the mold, break the rules, create their own rules and literally go after their dreams and the dreams of our country with a vengeance. I'm humbled every time when I think about all Alexander Hamilton accomplished in his short life. I have so much I want to do in this lifetime and I'll be damned if I'm going to throw away my shot.
"I am not throwing away my shot." What does that lyric mean to you? What are you throwing away? What are you pushing off to do "when you are older, when you have more money, when the kids move out, when your ready?" Do it- now. And if you don't have an anthem go find one! Or steal one of mine. Pick a song that gets you FIRED up about sharing your gifts with the world because there is only one you. Don't throw away your shot.
